Biography

As associate vice president for research – social sciences, humanities and the arts, Tabbye Chavous supports the research efforts of faculty in the social sciences, humanities and the arts. Chavous, professor of psychology and education, also collaborates with members of the UMOR Leadership Team to foster interdisciplinary initiatives, and provide support for UMOR units and programs. Professor Chavous earned a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and joined U-M as an assistant professor in 1998.

Research Interests

Her research focuses on racial and gender identity development among African American adolescents and young adults, and implications for academic and psychological adjustment.

She also leads several studies focused on academic and disciplinary identity development in math and science fields. Professor Chavous served as chair for the Combined Program in Education and Psychology, associate dean for academic programs and initiatives at the Rackham Graduate School, and most recently, director of the National Center for Institutional Diversity.
